You can use whatever you have laying around the house to practice though.

Stitches & Code (US Term)

• ch          = chain
• st           = stitch(es)
• sk          = skip
• REP      = Repeat
• SC        = Single Crochet 
• HDC     = Half Double Crochet 
• DC        = Double Crochet 
• DTri C   = Double Triple crochet 
• Turn          =  Turn your work ..

Start with slip knot , make chains = 40 ( note this is just a swatch )

1st Row - Add 1ch, skip very first ch, thn each chain SC across ...

2nd Row - 1ch, SC, (6ch, skip 1ch, 1SC,1HDC, 3DC)  skip 2st. ,SC,.  REP

3rd Row - 6ch, SC, 3ch, SC, 3ch, SC repeat until you reach end and then very last stitch double triple                      crochet

4th Row -1ch, SC, SC,(6ch, skip 1ch, 1SC,1HDC, 3DC)skip 2st. ,SC,. Repeat

5th Row - 8ch, SC, 3ch, SC, 3ch, SC repeat until you reach end , 2ch , & thn very last stitch double triple crochet

6th Row- Repeat 2nd row 

7th Row - Repeat 3rd row 

keep going on with same pattern .until you reach your desired Size or  Length .:)
